Spotlight on Horns at Pogo’s

pogos1.jpgIt’s like a music revival, the souls of each horn-player jubilating in high communion with keys, bass, guitar and drums, filling the smoky, packed confines of little Pogo’s Tavern with musical lyrics of pure joy. Are these guys having fun or what? Are we on the Left Bank in Paris or in a basement in Greenwich Village? This is as authentic a night of swingin, heartfelt, exuberant jazz as you are going to find anywhere on the planet.

Dick Fazio, on keys, has his own gig here with Rick Jones on trumpet and flugle horn, Sugar George Clark on drums, Norm Ross on bass. Bobby Lee Howard joins with guitar, both electric and acoustical. But then the true magic comes in the form of horns – many horns, together or in successive solos, the sheer power of the music lifts the roof. Just a taste of one evening: Jimmy Dell and Shawn West on sliding trombone, Dr. George Ritter on Alto Sax, James on tenor sax, Rick Marino on tenor sax and clarinet, Jim Tenant on trumpet.

New life has been breathed into a familiar Vegas haunt with the introduction of Dick Fazio’s gig. In its 39th year, we expect a big celebration April 15 ’08 for its 40th. The magic is happening on Friday nights @ 8:30 pm. Drinks are workingman-priced (a beer and a Chivas on the rocks for $5.50). No cover charge and free popcorn. 2103 N. Decatur Blvd Las Vegas NV (just north of W Lake Mead, by side street Sawyer Ave.) Plenty of parking. NON SMOKE-FREE.
