Tim Bratt’s Jazz

l1020878.JPGWe stopped by the Tuscany to see Tim Bratt on drums with his Jazz group. Tim’s sound is sophisticated, edgy and very progressive, not easily accessible for the untrained jazz ear. It’s a comfortable spot, unlike many of the jazz venues around town and two beers are $5. Tim is putting together a new group as Chris Gordon is playing with Joe Piscopo at the Hilton. Joe Lano will be back when UNLV finishes the semester.

I like Tim. He is a young man with a vision. He aims to revitalize the jazz scene in Las Vegas with a more youthful and innovative energy. Vegas had a glory day in years past, but what’s left are memories and quite a few heads of grey hair. Tim wants to bring some talent from the East Coast, people he’s played with, to introduce the local audience to a jazz more present, looking to future, than nostalgic, looking back. He’s using creativity to manifest his vision – taking steps to start a non-profit. He’s found a good spot at Tuscany’s, and doesn’t agree with those who think the venue might be too small to support the kind of guest musicians he wants to bring in. “This place is bigger than a lot of jazz clubs in New York,” he laughs. Besides, the nature of jazz is intimate. You want to be up close and personal with the artists, it’s a major part of the experience.

8:30p-midnite. No cover charge. Piazza Lounge (by reception) Tuscany Hotel and Casino, 355 E Flamingo at Howard Hughes Parkway Las Vegas NV
