The Stoney Curtis Band closed up the day for the 12 hour blues charity event on Sat May 19. Unfortunately, this was the only group that I caught, but boy did they really play a show. The gig included a mix of instrumentals and vocals, even featuring a couple covers of Dick Dale and Del-Tones surfer style music. Both the bassist and guitarist switched instruments and vocals several times; the drummer and keyboardist sang a song here and there. Sit ins including a saxophone and harmonica brought even more depth to their rich and varied sound. I was awed when the guitar/bassist (not Johnny Z) played guitar and harmonica at the same time, performing solos on both. The show was truly outstanding. It doesn’t get much better than this.

My advice: catch their next appearance at the Sand Dollar on June 9th.
