Relative number of deaths in Bahrain and Libya compared to Egypt

A Point of View, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Middle East & North Africa, Politics | | February 19, 2011 at 12:46

To put in perspective the numbers of people in the streets and the number of protesters, it’s important to think in percentages of population and not raw numbers. Egypt has 80+ million. Libya has 6.5 million. Bahrain has less than 800,000.

Think of the relative number of deaths compared to Egypt:
100 deaths in Libya is like 1200 in Egypt.
10 deaths in Manama is like a 1000 deaths in Cairo.

The Bahraini Al Khalifa ruling family has blinked and pulled the military out of Pearl Square.  The story in Libya is far from over. Gaddafi is like a Roman using bullets instead of crosses to put down a rebellion of his slaves. He is willing to line the streets of his cities with dead to keep in power.
