An especially odd Muammar Gaddafi appears on state TV

After seeing the 15 second clip of Muammar Gaddafi telling viewers not to believe the “dog TV channels,” I have a hard time believing that he is still in charge. He’s always been an odd duck, but his appearance on Libyan State TV showed an old man who looked quite seriously impaired. Armed with an umbrella and sporting a flap-eared hat, he declared to the Libyan people that he was still in Libya and not in Venezuela. It was telecast at about 2:00 am local time in Tripoli. When it was over, he drove off in his Gaddafi-mobile.

His appearance certainly explains why his son Saif Al-Islam went on TV to talk to the world. Saif was incoherent and rambling enough to shock everyone. I can’t imagine the father Muammar Gaddafi being able to make any sense at all.

Whatever evils and faults can be attributed to Mubarak, he’s a sharp old guy for 80 something. He seems quite lucid in his delusion. Gaddafi had the air of someone who would need a caretaker to go out for the afternoon.

I’m not saying he’s not dangerous, but that he doesn’t seem to have the mental faculties to mastermind a military strategy to put down an uprising. I would not say that about Saif. He’s so out of touch, he doesn’t seem to realize that no one believes his lies, but he still has the ruthless cunning to carry out the massacres going on.
