Egyptian flag links mosque and church

This clip was tweeted by Wael Ghonim showing Egyptians using a giant flag to link a mosque with the church across the street. There are about 10 million Coptic Christians in Egypt who are reported to make up 10-15% of the population.

The Egyptian government has always guaranteed the Copts right to worship, but there have been many conflicts between Copts and Muslims. The January 25 Revolution was joined by Christians who demonstrated for the removal of Mubarak in spite of pervasive fear among them of Egypt becoming an Islamic state. Mubarak did as good a job convincing his own people of the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood as he did the outside world.

We’re all betting on it was a scare tactic, but only time will tell. There is no doubt that the new Constitution has to be carefully constructed to avoid any minority – fanatical or otherwise – seizing control.
