Virile Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi on TV not old man Gaddafi

A Point of View, Libya, Middle East & North Africa, Politics | | February 20, 2011 at 17:50

It is rare one gets to watch a truly deranged tyrant hang himself and his regime with words. There is simply no way any credible government could support this man who was speaking for his father, Muammar Gaddafi. Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi rambled on for about an hour in front of the world, promising total reform tomorrow on the one hand and promising a bloodbath with the other.

It’s the same old scare tactic: (Remember it from the Communism days – the domino effect principle that gave rise to the Vietnam War?) Only the Gaddafi’s can run Libya. Without them there is civil war,  tribal war, Islamic government, no oil, no food, chaos. Saif even promised 40 years of Armageddon. Europe will not get its oil and the American fleet will invade. The world as we know it will end. Yes – it just might and good riddance!

I thought Mubarak made a fool of himself, but I was completely unprepared for the deranged rambling of this clown. Saif even claimed protesters were hopped up on drugs like ecstasy. He blamed the uprising on three factors: Islamists, the media, and drug addicts. Who do they have on Saturday Night Live that can do the parody? Could never be as funny as the real thing.

You can’t laugh because more than 300 people have lost their lives so far in this spontaneous, popular uprising. Scores more are seriously injured and will suffer the rest of their lives. This country has a population of about 6.5 million. This is a huge per capita number of casualties.

I saw Saif’s speech as desperate nonsense. It’s textbook. The same thing happened in Tunisia and then Egypt. The rambling speech, fully revealing a leader totally out of touch, followed within days by capitulation. A lot of lives can still be lost unfortunately. It’s over for the Gaddafi regime, I believe, but not yet. But still, I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up in the morning and hear that Gaddafi is gone. It seems that crazy in Libya.

Already it’s crazy that Gaddafi sent his son out to speak, a man who doesn’t even hold an official position in the government. Has there been a coup in the family? Has virile Saif taken over? Or are they afraid that pere Gaddafi would look too old and weak on TV?

When are these guys going to learn? The harder they make it and the harsher they are on their citizens, the more they assure themselves of forced retirement.
